Traveling to Africa
Gather with loved ones beside a shaded pool on the terrace of a safari lodge. Come together on a grassy hill with Mt. Kilimanjaro as a stunning backdrop. Count yourself blessed by a local chief in a Maasai ceremony on the rim of the Ngorongoro Crater. Afterwards, spend a lazy afternoon sharing stories and brunch in the shade of an ancient Marula tree or at a catered barbecue on the vast savannah.
Some say this place is the original Garden of Eden. With luxury lodges, exhilarating game drives, privileged cultural visits, and extraordinary food and wine, Africa will certainly be a fresh, new beginning for you. For perfect game viewing, plan your festivities between December and February.
• Exhilarating outdoor adventures
• Luxury lodges and fine dining
In Tanzania, you’ll find spicy foods with coconut milk, rice, chapatti bread, and grilled meats seasoned with cloves, nutmeg, cinnamon, and curry. In South Africa, “Cape Dutch” cuisine includes curries, sweet chutneys, and fresh fish. Moroccan, Chinese, Congolese, and Japanese restaurants can be found in the larger cities. Popular beverages include Chai tea, African beers, and marvelous regional wines. Locally available fresh fruit and nuts make for wonderful snacks. And the jerky-like Biltong is a popular treat.
Knowledgeable guides can provide insights into the languages, beliefs, and practices of the Tsonga-Shangaan, Pedi, San (Bushmen), Venda, Ndebele, and Maasai cultures. As well as the historic struggles of Nelson Mandela, Archbishop Desmond Tutu, and other freedom fighters. The music and dance of the regions include traditional rhythms and hauntingly beautiful “storytelling” melodies – sung by talented indigenous choirs – that will remain in your memory long after you return home.
Select lodges offer spa services, golf, croquet, lawn bowling, and swimming pools. More adventurous types may wish to charter a boat on Lake Tanganyika, climb the imposing Mt. Kilimanjaro, or go scuba diving in the Seychelles.
